If you’re newly engaged, planning your wedding is probably the first thing on your mind. But remember one of the most important aspects of getting married: getting your marriage license! Applying for a marriage license will look different in each state, so getting a head start on the planning process is important to avoid unnecessary stress. With this in mind, here are a few tips to help you get started.
What is a Marriage License?
A marriage license is a document an engaged couple must obtain from a government official to legally marry. Getting this license varies depending on the location but typically does not require much work. In some states, marriage licenses are available online; in others, couples must appear in person to get a marriage license.
Once the license is issued, the couple is free to get married. After the ceremony, the officiant signs the marriage license and submits it to the appropriate government authority, who will issue a certified copy of the marriage certificate.
Some couples get a marriage license to solidify their commitment to each other, even if they are not planning to marry immediately. Others see it as a necessary step in the marriage process. Regardless, a marriage license is essential for marriage in the United States.
How to Get a Marriage License in Maryland
First, you will need to find a licensed officiant who is authorized to perform marriages in your state. Then, you will need to apply for a marriage license. In Maryland, you apply for a marriage license through the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office in the county where you will have your wedding. This application can be completed in any county or by mail as long as neither party lives in the county where the ceremony is being held. Requirements to apply for a marriage license include:
- Both parties must be at least 18 years old.
- At least one party must appear in person at the Circuit Court Clerk in the county where the ceremony will occur.
- Parties must provide photo ID and personal information, including full name, age, date of birth, address, and social security number.
Each county sets its fees for purchasing a marriage license. Your license may cost between $30-$85. Some offices only accept cash, debit or credit cards, or certified checks. There is a 2-day waiting period to marry in Maryland. Your license will not be effective, and you can not hold a ceremony until 6:00 a.m. on the second day after the license is issued.
